My iPhone helped me to feel less guilty. Each year, I find myself mailing out holiday cards just a few days before Christmas. One year, to break the pattern, I sent out 350 cards the day before Thanksgiving to prove to myself I could be improved. But it was only one year. This year it seemed that one emergency after another interfered with focusing on writing out cards. My wife Lorrie's sending of 30 cards covered the immediate relatives and very close friends, but definitely not my clients or people I know separate from her.
So, there I was driving on Route 684 toward Newburgh, and on my way to Poughquag to join my wife and daughter celebrating Christmas at our niece's home. I just left my parents in New Rochelle where I had Christmas dinner with them. My iPhone was laying on the seat next to me. I was content to be driving along, getting into the holiday spirit, listening to holiday songs on the radio. I then realized, "Oh no. I forgot completely to send out cards!" I felt guilty about leaving card-sending to the last minute.
I reached for my iPhone, touched the phone icon, and on the next screen I pressed the "contacts" virtual button. I lowered the radio volume. I took the iPhone from the seat next to me and put the iPhone on my left forearm (attached by an expandable band) so I can touch its screen without being distracted from the road. Then, I started flicking my finger down the clear contact list, touching the people who meant the most to me. Calling at 4pm on Christmas afternoon. I started with A and went through W. I reached many people, surprising them and exchanging well wishes. I left messages for several people. And I even sent a few short succinct emails. I didn't bother sending ecards, from the internet, although I'll entertain that next year. As I turned onto I84W with about 16 miles before I was to get off that highway, I found myself wishing for more traffic, to slow down the pace of the cars, so I could get a few more calls done before I arrived at the party. I was enjoying the calling, hearing the Christmas songs in the background, and watching the road and the sky pass by in front of me. Oh well, I guess I could make more calls another time. In anticipation of my upcoming long trip to visit relatives, I'm planning to sync my database and add more names and numbers to my contact list. Then, while driving, I'll put the radio on low, pull my iPhone onto my forearm and start touching the screen, and touching people in my life.
